Maintaining Your Lawn Furniture

June 20th, 2011 Comments off

Lawn furniture that is in bad shape is not only ugly, it’s downright dangerous! Your furniture takes a beating since it’s exposed to the elements for most, if not all of the year. It can be quite easy for resin furniture to develop cracks and wood furniture to get splinters and loose slats and legs. That’s why it’s important to examine your furniture regularly and make repairs as needed. Even wooden furniture that has an all-weather finish is bound to wear out sometime, and even the best of resin furniture will get stained and worn looking after a while.

How often you check and maintain your lawn furniture will depend on the weather in your area and how much you use your furniture. Generally speaking, you should give your furniture a wipe-down about once a week just to be sure it’s clean and dust free and that you have looked it over carefully. When you do this look for loose screws, splinters, or rough places that could scratch or snag and repair them as needed. With resin furniture, there really isn’t any possibility of repair. If your resin furniture cracks, you should dispose of it to avoid dangerous, embarrassing accidents. If it gets a rough spot, you could sand it with fine sandpaper.

Cleaning resin furniture periodically with a bleach solution will help with staining. If you do need to dispose of resin furniture, be sure to check your area for recycling options. Resin furniture is not biodegradable and will be in the landfill forever if you just set it out on the curb for trash pick-up. Wood furniture is far more environmentally friendly because you can repair and refinish it almost endlessly. When you finally do have to dispose of it, you can chop it up for kindling or shred it into sawdust for your compost heap. Read more…
